Mat and Mel’s wedding was planned to perfection. There’s just so much to talk about because everything seemed to have a story. Firstly, Mat loves Mustangs. Actually Mat has a love for lots of different things and becomes very passionate about them. Ages ago Mat and Mel went to check out wedding cars and walked into a place that has the much loved Mustangs Mat was after. But Mel pulled a neat trick on him, sidelining someone to surprise Mat for the wedding day, they pretended that the cars were booked out and that he would end up in BMW’s instead.
Actually that plan was taken so far that a friends BMW was enlisted as part of the joke and pulled up the day before. Mat spent some time cleaning it, decking it with a ribbon, and we even photographed Mat and the groomsmen in front of it.
Mel had her lovely wedding dress secreted away. Only her Mum had seen her in it. The two of them dressed Mel upstairs, with no one else allowed to peek in, before Mel took to the stairs and everyone watched the very beautiful bride descend. Tears rolled, rolled, rolled down cheeks. Her Dad’s. Her Mum’s. Every bridesmaid.
After the ceremony (more tears, more laughter) we headed round to Lake Parramatta Reserve for some photography. Not a place I had known prior to the wedding. It is a beautiful oasis in the middle of Sydney. We enjoyed some fantastic light as the sun set. A favourite shot is of Mel huddled up with her veil looking over her shoulder just as the sun has dipped to the horizon.
Mat and Mel’s reception was just right. It was handled beautifully by Mat’s Dad, the fabulous entertainer Marty Rhone. Mat and Mel love rabbits. Mat’s cufflinks were rabbits. There were rabbits scattered around the candy bar, and an illustrator, their friend Sarah Kate, had provided beautiful Watership Down style rabbits to feature on each table. Light boxes were on each table as a support for the floral arrangements. I made use of one for the ring photo.
The bridal party entered the reception and Mat sang to Mel too much applause and laughter. But the surprises didn’t finish there for at the end of his speech of love he sat at the keyboard and performed his own composition for Mel. Again the tears flowed and the applause rang long and loud.
