While Nick hails from Sydney he now calls Newcastle home (and there’s plenty of great reasons why Newcastle is appearing on lists of the most liveable cities in the world). Nick and Emily are getting married here soon. I met up with Nick and Emily near King Edward Park for a Newcastle Beach Engagement Session. The weather was a little warm to say the least, so it was a relief to be next to the ocean, a playground that the Novocastrians were making full use of in January.
We wandered around the coast for our session, dipping down to the sea edge, clambering around the rocks, and jumping the fences. Newcastle makes you feel adventurous!
There’s an unplanned, random, unaffected and happy beauty to this place. It’s partly carved from the coastline, partly contoured along the ridges and valleys. It conceals and reveals moments of now and some from time. Much like a relationship does.
And of course, I’m thrilled to photograph couples. Love is their reason for being together. The future is their adventure and promise. The present is. The past is memories and the joy that comes from sharing them.
The designer Karl Lagerfeld is quoted as saying, “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” I love photographs for this reason too. In fact, it’s sometimes nigh impossible to accurately recall moments when even the most precious memories can fade with time, “the deep but invisible tracks that are left behind”. It’s not that the moments are irrelevant or insignificant and therefore can’t be remembered, but more often that there are so many delightful, incredible and inspiring things that happen that we’re hard pressed to remember them accurately.
When we get to photograph couples at or near the start of the their relationships we have the privilege of helping you recall the beginnings and the origins.
It means you get to look back at photographs remembering words whispered, hugs given, the newness of love. And that’s all pretty wonderful, like Emily and Nick…
